Professional expertise 

David Johnson is a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon with more than 25 years’ experience. He has an international reputation for his skills in knee surgery, knee joint replacement and in managing sports injuries. His expertise is sought after by some of the world’s leading sportsmen and women, and he has treated Premier League and international football players, rugby players (from the British Lions and Springboks, among others), Wimbledon champions and top players from many other sports. He also treats many people of all ages and backgrounds with other kinds of joint injuries, especially degenerative and arthritic conditions of the knee.

David specialises in knee surgery, sports injuries joint replacement and Orthopaedic Surgery. He has extensive training in orthopaedics surgery at Manchester, Bristol and Oxford followed by a year’s travelling scholarship to Australia, and further travelling fellowships in the USA. He was the first British trainee to be awarded the travelling scholarship of the European Society of Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine – American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine exchange. His expertise has been recognised by the awarding of an Honorary Fellowship of the American Society for Sports Medicine. He wrote a text book entitled “Controversies in Soft Tissue Surgery of the Knee”, and is one of only two European Board members of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. On many occasions he has been asked to undertake teaching or lecturing activities nationally and internationally.

When I make decisions or perform surgical procedures my key aim is to provide each individual patient the best relief of pain and restore them to full function as easily and quickly as possible.

David has 25 years of medico-legal and medical negligence reporting, and has attended court as an expert witness on many occasions. He is often asked to report in respect of failed knee replacement surgery and ligament reconstruction, catastrophic orthopaedic injuries, loss of limbs or infected joint replacements. David has worked for the NHS Health Care Commission as a Specialist Opinion in complaints review and the NHSLA. He has also undertaken fitness to practice reports on behalf of the General Medical Counsel.
